Canvas Pontiac Awards - Spring 2014
Canvas Pontiac Spring 2014
The second season of Spring 2014 continues the efforts of bring art and culture to the community. This year thirty-eight artists submitted their works for display. Twenty of those made it through initial jury to be showcased on large 8x10' canvases on buildings throughout Downtown Pontiac.
The arts feel alive in Downtown Pontiac. The second installment of the DIA Inside|Out program has brought the masters of the DIA to our Pontiac thanks to funding from the Kauffman Foundation.
Art related business ventures are also seeing their rise as part of our artistic community returning such as artist lofts and art businesses. From some of our most recent business members including "The Artists Lounge" inside iHill providing painting experiences as a party event to our boutique shop "Lyrics on Vinyl" located at 35 N. Saginaw we can feel the arts coming back.
This spring our art programs have invited over 500 people to walk our downtown on several tours to explore what we have to offer, and the art we display is seen daily by 18,000 commuters. Canvas Pontiac's art awakening is doing it's job in helping people "Discover the Spirit of Pontiac".
On Thursday May 15, Elektricity night club hosted the second awards program to honor our top artists of the season. In a great Circus and Classical entertainment production we honored the artists for making themselves vulnerable to public opinion, and beautiful displays of public expression.
Third Place was won by Wendelin Eve Wilson with her piece "Sticks and Stones"
Second Place was won by David Birdsong with his piece "Alli and the Fairy Door"
First Place was won by Ian Houston for his piece "Jasmine & Onikaa"
And the winner of this years Marty Coats award judged by the Community was won by Jerald Staley II with his piece "New Beginnings"
Canvas Pontiac and the future
Canvas Pontiac 2015
Canvas Pontiac is inspiring the community to be involved. The vision of the program is to become an international program. This year our call for artists was seen by over 1000 people and we've had to call our talent regional instead of local because they are coming from further and further away.
Canvas Pontiac 3D.
Canvas Pontiac 3D will include the installation of ten temporary outdoor public art exhibits in it's inaugural season. Qualified artists will have their sculptures placed at highly visible locations within the downtown business district of historic Pontiac for thousands of residents and visitors to see.
