Membership drives Downtown Pontiac
It's membership drive time for Downtown Pontiac. The Downtown Management organization that runs downtown is known as the Pontiac Downtown Business Association (PDBA) and operates as a 501(C)6 Non Profit Organization.
Membership supports the head count of the organization when influencing change at the county, state, and federal level as well as when working with partner organizations and sponsors. Additionally membership helps drive the direction of the organization by voting in the board of directors and voting on key focuses for the year.
The misnomer of the Pontiac Downtown BUSINESS Association is that only businesses can join and participate. ANYONE FROM THE COMMUNITY CAN BE A MEMBER AND HELP INFLUENCE THE DIRECTION OF DOWNTOWN. The organization will be undergoing a name change over the next few months to help change this perception.
The impact of Downtown Pontiac's recovery includes several multi-year projects that were begun or completed in 2015. Saginaw Green, a community greenspace, is now part of the walkable downtown plan with green grass and pathways. This project turned blight into beauty and a community space. Twenty-seven historic wayside markers recognizing our automotive heritage were installed and are part of 60 markers installed city-wide. Canvas Pontiac's key partnership with the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts) takes the program to the next level with confirmation of support for the 2016 year art program. Partnerships with programs like Healthy Pontiac We Can saw that our downtonw was connected to the Clinton River Trail plus the installation of bike racks and bicycle repair stations making it easier to walk and bike into downtown.
Most downtowns are run through city government, however in 2014 the City of Pontiac turned over responsibilities of the DDA (Downtown Development Authority) to the PDBA. Now operating as a non profit the organization utilizes the efforts of volunteers and coordination throught he National Main Street Program to drive towards the Master Plan for downtown.
