Four years ago Pontiac celebrated the sesquicentennial of our founding fathers chartering the City of Pontiac as the first inland city in the State of Michigan. Many events were scheduled that year, with the culminating event launching on March 14th to honor Pontiac's birthday.
Today we celebrate, March 14th and one-hundred and fifty-four years ago when Pontiac was formed. The city has gone through and seen much in its 155 years and will continue on for many more generations to come. The Spirit of Pontiac shows in how the community is rising to the occasion and connecting dots as groups are supporting one another instead of recreating wheels and there is a sense that the city is on a good path moving forward.
One of those paths of moving forward is the Downtown Historic District known as Main Street Pontiac welcomes new businesses every quarter of businesses choosing to move into Downtown or plant their roots in the community. On March 14 of 2016, the 154th birthday of the city of Pontiac, the community came together to welcome its newest downtown neighbor, Career Dress. Operating since 2002, Career Dress works with over forty intake partners to provide professional career outfits for women re-entering the workforce for their job interview and their first days on the job. Outgrowing their original home operating out of a basement level, they choose Downtown Pontiac Main Street level alongside Huron street to serve their members from around the Tri-county area. Downtown Pontiac also celebrates having 94% occupancy of the residential units affirming that citizens want to take residence in Downtown and feel safe calling it home. With Downtowns latest statistic of touting 33 retail shops within the loop, there are are incredible locations to walk in and purchase goods and services from our street-level shops, anywhere from office supplies, to vintage clothing, to great lunch sandwiches and deserts, and also home furnishings and even your next bike. One-hundred and fifty-four years ago, Pontiac looked much different. As with any new construction the home and community gets built. Over the years, Pontiacs front porch, the first impression of the community, Downtown Pontiac, was built.
